Lily Burton was only three years old when she was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. Leading up to that frightening diagnosis, she had been sick and unable to shake a fever. Little did her family know that her white blood cells were no longer doing their job protecting her tiny body against disease. They had turned cancerous. A bone marrow transplant was quickly identified as necessary.

Both her parents and big sister were tested to see if they were a match. Unfortunately, they were not. Little Lily was placed on the bone marrow registry and, luckily, an umbilical cord match was found.

Without the facilities here at home, the family of four moved temporarily to Winnipeg for treatment. While the actual transplant only took ten minutes, Lily had a long road ahead of her. The family spent the next six months living in Winnipeg. Many rounds of chemotherapy and numerous stays in hospital followed. Thankfully, Lily’s story has a happy ending. This hockey-playing, vibrant young lady is now nine-years-old and cancer-free.
